The Minnehaha County State’s Attorney’s Office is currently recruiting for a full time Deputy State’s Attorney to begin appointment in January 2009. Position will perform professional legal work on behalf of Minnehaha County and county departments in civil and criminal court and administrative proceedings.
Prepares criminal cases with emphasis in magistrate court prosecutions such as DWI, domestic assault, and drug cases; tries matters to the court or jury; investigates, prepares, and presents cases to the grand jury; pre-trial motion practice and appellate work; prepares and represents the State at juvenile proceedings such as abuse and neglect cases, review hearings, and delinquencies; researches and drafts legal pleadings; works with and provides legal advice to Minnehaha County Commissioners, department heads, and employees such as drafting correspondence, legal opinions, contracts and agreements, easements, bid specifications, and civil and criminal pleadings; appears on behalf of the State’s Attorney at public and inter-governmental forums, speaking events, educational functions, public organizations, task forces and legislative bodies; represents the State in involuntary civil commitment proceedings; trains law enforcement on issues such as search and seizure, courtroom testimony, and trial preparation.
Graduation from an accredited law school. Must have either passed the South Dakota bar exam or be eligible to take the next bar examination. Candidates who are currently licensed to practice law in South Dakota preferred. Working knowledge of civil and criminal law and methods and practices of pleadings, court procedures and rules of evidence; principles, methods, materials, and practices utilized in legal research, general law, and established precedents. Ability to prosecute cases. Ability to speak and write effectively in the preparation and presentation of legal matters. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public. Demonstrated interest in prosecution preferred.
