The mission of the Cooperative Extension Service is to provide informal education to farmers, homemakers, and youth in South Dakota. The Extension Service plans and conducts programs designed to improve net income to farmers, to provide homemakers with information to help in the efficient use of family resources, to teach young people responsibility and leadership (including the 4-H program).
In essence, the Extension Service is geared toward the family involved in production and marketing of agricultural products and the maintenance of the home that provides a fulfilling and suitable standard of living.
NOTE: The lines of authority for the County Extension Service are somewhat irregular. Extension Educators are employees of the State with supervision from the State Extension Service through SDSU and the District Extension Supervisors. Control over the office and its functions is carried jointly by these State groups and the County Commissioners (through the County Extension Board).
